Instead of asking for one-time contributions of food, our volunteers (Neighborhood Coordinators) enlist their neighbors to become long-term Food Donors.

Results for February

The Growth Continues - We collected 5,600 pounds in our February drop off which equates to 4650 meals. This continues our growth of the program and reflects on the generosity of the many Davis residents who have opted to give. We also have several Sacramento area donors who have been inspired by the program and make the trip to Davis to contribute food every two months.

Some Guidelines

Small quantities are better than large. Approximately 75% of our clients are either single, single parents or small families. We provide food and essentials based on family size to ensure we have adequate food for all who are in need. Additionally smaller items gives us the flexibility of providing two of an item to large families while also meeting the needs of our singles and small families. We cannot use extra large items such as 5+ pounds bags of rice or 64 oz. containers of oil.

We strive to provide healthy food to those in need if at all possible. Therefore low salt and low sugar items are preferred, if they can be found. 

We cannot accept home canned items or canned goods long past they 'best by' or 'use by' dates.

The STEAC Food Closet

The STEAC Food Closet is located in the parking lot behind Saint Martins Church at 642 Hawthorn Lane in Davis.

What we do

Neighbors donate a bag of food every two months. It's incredibly easy, because we supply the bag…and we pick up the food! This provides our Food Closet with a steady, year-round supply of food…and provides donors with the ongoing satisfaction of making a real difference. They also get to know their neighbors, which builds a powerful sense of community. So everyone wins.

What's the result?

full shelvesWe began in June 2015 as the STEAC Food Project partnering with the STEAC Food Closet. That initial pilot program resulted is providing 1930 lbs. of non-perishable food from over 100 donors. We are collecting over 5000 lbs. every two months from over 400 donors.
